“PASSION IS THE GENESIS OF GENIUS”
– Galileo Galilei –
Everything starts from a vision. Usually it is a functional concept that “floats” in the mind searching for an adequate combination of volumes and shapes. Sometimes the idea just pops up looking at an object not even connected to the the design world. For project METROPOLIS, the very first sparkle was produced by a Kenter link that was resting open on the deck of a barge. Two identical elements get together with a mirror coupling. This way a logo resumed the concept creating a focus point (eye) that becomes a run around element. First sketches on the moleskin start to tray proportions and family feeling on paper.

The very first sketch, often revels most of the points and design concepts to be well developed afterward in. Drawing is like a “designanalytic” session. Reading which one can be considered main or secondary lines, considering proportions and volume relations, skyline and “character” all emerge by designer’s capacity to understand his own sketch as it would be a Young’s dream interpretation. Creativity (as the origin word “creation” reminds us) is not a metter of finding like it would be a treasure hunt, but a way to “build” a path of consciousness by means of our culture and interpretation of the present moment. With a great strength Pablo Picasso summarized the concept in his famous quote “The chief enemy of creativity is common sense” (Pablo Picasso)

Portraits used to be historically a way to share the existence of someone with the who never met him or her before by means of a depiction. There were three main ways to represent people, profile, front and oblique. All of those evolved with the art during the years in order to give more and more feelings about the represented character. In the same way a yacht can be displayed in several ways highlighting different aspects. A starboard side view gives the feeling of length compared with shape and air draft, shows side proportions and deck length. Like a renaissance profile portrait, used to give a sense of austerity to a character, a side view helps to imagine a final aspect of a yacht in its architectonical and technical shape. Oblique (three dimensional view) was more empathic and was able even to explored the personality of someone, same way representing and drawing an object in 3D views gives more sense of reality and not using it in a modern design process could be like going back to the ancient Egyptian art of hieroglyphic sculpture…

Once the side view is acceptable and matches with decks layout, the hardest part of defining a yacht shape begins. Lots and lots of 3D modeling and sketching hours is spent to make wireframe and surfaces as coherent as possible with the idea of the project. The aspect is given not just by the over all balance of volumes and function but also though the harmony of lines. Like all the “organic” shapes in nature, a floating object is made by all around running lines and not just two dimension ones. Planes inclination, fillets, sharp cuts, give personality to an object. The designer builds up a unique language of shapes via a complex “grammar” of interconnections that have to be studied and repetitive. This is the reason why a time consuming process of 3D modeling has to be done by the designer himself like a sculptor manages marble or clay he has to decide step by strep how to make the result coherent with the initial concept.

Modern technology allows us to verify step by step how our idea will take shape. The “vision” feeling was cancelled by the “virtual” feeling of 3D modeling programs. Even if this might sound less romantic, the virtual representation of an object is a real booster to creativity. We can see, show and share with owners and builders every aspect of a project. We can refine and tailor-made an object and its spaces around the owner’s lifestyle and expectations.
